We joined in August 1997 to officially form Painstruck. Arising from a very assorted musical scene, we even played under the name of Breed-Machine until we've changed completely our musical structure, staying as founding members Nuno Loureiro (Lead Guitar and Vocals), Paulo Lafaia (Drums), Alexandre Afonso (Bass Guitar), and Ricardo Correia (Guitar). We all have had previous parallel projects, me, Merciless Death, Exiled, Sublevel and had participated in Disaffected, Grog and Squad. Paulo and the rest members played with Mortify.
We immediately started working in a group of songs that would succeed in describing our ideals and emotions. We played some gigs, and in the last two weeks of December we recorded the first, homonym and single demo-tape ever recorded, which was released in 1998 and was produced by me, in our own rehearsal room.1999 started very well. Various gigs took place and at one point in April, was the time for "Aggressive Ways to Pacify" to take form through the hands of Luis Barros in his Rec'N'Roll studios. But what after two years would become the debut album, didn't have an easy time to reach the light of day. The band signed contracts with three Portuguese labels (known labels which never kept their end of the bargain. Two of them even mislead the band), spent time and energies never giving up, but for some, all these problems seemed too much for them to handle and so Afonso and Ricardo gave up on Painstruck. They were substituted by Ricardo Veloso (from Desire) playing Bass and Ivo Martins (also from Grog) playing Guitar. Besides several other gigs on the course of that year, some high moments of our career were the ones with Dismal and Jesus Martyr.
Then came along that lucky break with the signing of a record deal with Portuguese Paranoid Records. "Aggressive ways to pacify" was, of course, the first, and the launch party achieved epic proportions when the band played a set of two-and-a-half hours of their own originals, twenty-one metal classics from Cannibal Corpse, Wasp, C.O.C., Pantera, Crowbar, Black Sabbath, etc... and inviting several other guests to perform alongside of them. All of this was a first in Portuguese lands! We toured Portugal extensively. While doing it we also managed to play in Vigo (Spain) and an amazing two date set with the almighty Biohazard! YEAH!!! On the summer of 2002 we received an invitation to play, at the last minute, on Portugal's heaviest summer festival, Ermal, alongside names like Slipknot and Dimmu Borgir. At the time we had already finished our second album which we recorded on Floyd Studios in Lisbon, and produced by yours truly, in March of 2002, to be released in October. "A Whole new perception" was released one year from the release of the first CD, and it wasn't easy for us with one hell of a busy schedule to write it. But it came out ripping, with all the ideas in place, powerful, aggressive and bursting with emotion. Until now this was our masterpiece to aggression. And what better way to show everyone the well oiled engine Painstruck is than a two night set with Stone Sour, it was awesome! We also had the honour to be the first band to be invited to the 2003's Ermal edition, (this time not has a backup band). Unfortunately the whole festival was called off at the last possible minute. If you can, check-out the videos for "In us you live" (shot live with Stone Sour) and has been a constant on SOL musica.
The first edition of "A Whole new perception" sold-out, so now a new edition with never seen before photos and videos is on the forge. Early on 2003's summer our Bassist and good friend Ricardo Veloso was forced to leave the band due to professional commitments. A replacement was found, and a good one, Joao Madeira, already a four string man for other underground acts proved himself worthy of the band's respect and friendship.
Another change of events took place on the first of April (not a joke!). A new guitarist was added to our ranks and a new musical dimension also. Filipe Lima became our fifth member and he brought a new world of possibilities to the Painstruck sound. As a consequence of this little set backs we are focusing on preparing the successor of "A Whole new perception". Again another set back took place our long time member Ivo Martins had to leave the band, so now we are back to two guitarists. Also our current bass player left, and we are looking for a replacement.
We wanted to provide our friends and fans the opportunity to watch great Painstruck live shows and until everything is set we won't be touring so, because of that, we're expecting to start touring early next year if all goes well.
It's has been a long time since our site, WWW.PAINSTRUCK.COM hasn't been operational but as we promised it's finally done and it is excellent!Meanwhile if anyone wants to get in touch with us you can always send an e-mail.
See Ya!!!
